  • More about The Image of the Black in Latin American and Caribbean Art

The first comprehensive study of the visual portrayal of people of African descent in Latin America and the Caribbean, some twelve million of whom were forcibly imported into the Americas during the transatlantic slave trade, is The Image of the Black in Latin American and Caribbean Art. This second volume examines the time from the nineteenth century's final abolition of slavery in Brazil and Cuba through the Caribbean islands' independence to the present. The photographs and essays here expose the harmful effects of colonialism and slavery and the resolute efforts of Afrodescendant artists to assert their identity in the face of discrimination and denial. These volumes complement the vision of Dominique and Jean de Menil, art patrons who, in the 1960s, established an archive to gather images depicting the myriad ways that people of African descent have been represented in Western art from antiquity to the present. The de Menil family's original goal is continued by The Image of the Black in Latin American and Caribbean Art, and a fresh emphasis is placed on a rich and understudied field.
