A novel by a geologist-turned-journalist, "The Drilling Program," weaves together three eras of an Australian oil drilling location, delving into themes of conservation and aboriginal land rights.

In 1839, British explorer Stokes discovers oily sludge in water wells along the banks of the Victoria River.

In 1942, during World War II, wartime corporal Ash suspects a German-born missionary, Gabriel, of collaborating with Japanese invasion plans. Assisted by Aboriginal tracker Gabriel, Ash embarks on a mission to uncover the truth, driven by his determination to protect his country.

In 1987, after a drilling rig accident, geologist Brad meets hospital nurse Karen, the granddaughter of the missionary. Karen introduces Brad to Ash, who has become their guardian. Unexpectedly, Brad also encounters Gabriel, now a land rights activist. The drilling program is suspended due to the global stock market crash. Brad, guided by Ash, takes Karen to search for Stokes' water wells and the ruins of the mission. However, Ash has his own plans, and Gabriel holds more knowledge than Brad and Karen could have anticipated.

As the story unfolds, tensions rise, and the characters are forced to confront their pasts and the consequences of their actions. "The Drilling Program" is a captivating exploration of history, culture, and the human spirit, offering a thought-provoking perspective on the complexities of power, loyalty, and the pursuit of truth.
