An extensive early imperial structure, known as the Julian Basilica, was uncovered during early-20th-century excavations at the Roman Forum in Ancient Corinth. The basilica, which stood on a podium over four meters high, dominated the east end of the forum in terms of size, appearance, and function until its destruction in the 4th century A.D. Within its walls, one of the largest known shrines to the imperial cult was located, likely serving as the seat of the imperial court of law for the Roman province of Achaia. The basilica housed a remarkable collection of 11 or more large-scale statues, most likely depicting members of the Julio-Claudian family, including Augustus, his heirs Gaius and Lucius, and possibly Divus Iulius, Germanicus, Nero Caesar, and Claudius. Additionally, it featured an altar dedicated to Divus Augustus and various dedications to the genius Augusti, the gens Augusta, and other family members.
This richly illustrated volume offers a comprehensive contextual study of this significant building, with the remains first published by Saul Weinberg in 1960 (Corinth I.5). Scotton delves into the architectural remains, Vanderpool explores the sculptural remains, and Roncaglia examines the epigraphical material. Each section provides extensive catalogues accompanied by new photographs and color reconstructions of the basilica and its grand interior.
The Julian Basilica's architectural significance lies in its imposing size and grandeur, reflecting the power and prestige of the Roman Empire during its early centuries. The podium upon which it stood elevated the structure, creating a commanding presence in the forum. The interior of the basilica was adorned with intricate marble floors, columns, and frescoes, showcasing the artistic craftsmanship of the time.
The sculptural remains within the basilica are equally impressive, with a diverse collection of statues depicting various Roman deities and important figures. The statues, many of which were life-size, were carefully crafted and adorned with intricate details, reflecting the attention to detail that was characteristic of Roman art.
The epigraphical material found at the basilica provides valuable insights into its history and significance. Inscriptions and graffiti on the walls and columns reveal information about the construction, renovation, and patronage of the basilica, as well as its religious and political importance.
The discovery and exploration of the Julian Basilica have shed light on the rich cultural heritage of Ancient Corinth and contributed to our understanding of the Roman Empire's early history. This volume serves as a valuable resource for scholars, researchers, and enthusiasts alike, providing a comprehensive examination of this important building and its significance in the ancient world.
