The railways of Wales exhibited a diverse range of characteristics, encompassing the heavy industrial sectors of the South and the more rural Mid- and North regions. However, the nation suffered greatly as a result of the Beeching Report, released in the early 1960s, which led to the closure of numerous lines and stations. The Last Years of Welsh Steam presents a captivating visual journey through the British Railways era, utilizing over 200 evocative color and black and white images. These photographs have been meticulously captured from various locations along the lines, including stations, sheds, and industrial sites. Some of the notable places featured in this collection include Aberystwyth, Afon Wen, Bala, Bangor, Barmouth, Barry, Bedwas, Blaenau Ffestiniog, Brecon, Builth Wells, Cardiff, Carmarthen, Colwyn Bay, Devil's Bridge, Fishguard, Holyhead, Llandudno, Llanidloes, Machynlleth, Magor, Merthyr Tydfil, Mountain Ash, Neath, Newport, Portmadoc, Pwllheli, Rhyl, Severn Tunnel Junction, Swansea, Talyllyn, Towyn, Welshpool, Whitland, and Wrexham.

Numerous designs by Collett, GWR, Hawksworth, and Churchward are showcased, highlighting the significant contributions of these engineers to the Welsh railway landscape. Additionally, some Stanier LMSR locomotives were employed in the country, particularly in the North. Several Taff Vale Railway engines remained in service, as did Swansea Harbour Trust shunters. Given the extensive colliery sidings and industrial requirements, a selection of industrial locomotives has been included in this collection.

The railways of Wales played a pivotal role in shaping the economic and social landscape of the country throughout its history. The Beeching Report's closures marked a significant setback, but the Last Years of Welsh Steam serves as a testament to the resilience and heritage of the Welsh railway system. Through these captivating images, we are able to relive the memories and experiences of a bygone era, honoring the contributions of those who built and operated the railways that once crisscrossed the Welsh countryside.
