Sarah Imhoff's book "The Lives of Jessie Sampter" explores the life of an individual who embodied contradictions. Jessie Sampter (1883-1938) gained recognition for her Course in Zionism (1915), a primer on American support for a Jewish state in Palestine. In 1919, Sampter immigrated to Palestine, declaring herself "married to Palestine." However, her own life and body did not fully align with traditional Zionist ideals. While Sampter identified as Jewish, she explored spiritual practices from various religions, including Christianity and Buddhism. Despite Zionism's emphasis on a strong and healthy body, Sampter described herself as "crippled" by polio and plagued by sickness throughout her life. While Zionism celebrated reproductive women's bodies, Sampter never married or had children, and she expressed homoerotic desires and engaged in same-sex relationships. By highlighting the discrepancies between Sampter's life and her religious and political ideals, Imhoff reveals the intricate and sometimes conflicting relationships between the body, queerness, disability, religion, and nationalism.
