This book is a sequel to the author's previous work on Princess Coronation Pacific locomotives, which covered their construction from 1937 to 1956. It picks up the story in 1957, detailing their operation and performance on the Caledonian, Royal Scot, and Midday Scot accelerated services of the late 1950s. The book also explores their continued heavy work as dieselization of the West Coast mainline is implemented, as well as the sudden withdrawal of the remaining examples at the end of the 1964 summer timetable.
Included in the book are the author's personal experiences and photographs, as well as descriptions provided by three Crewe men who fired these engines on the heavy overnight Crewe-Perth sleeper services in the late 1950s. Two of these men, Les Jackson and Bill Andrew, drove 6229 and 6233 in the preservation era. In addition to sharing their stories from their days in British Railways (BR), they also describe runs with the preserved locomotives and have included photographs from their personal collections. Crewe Works fitter, Keith Collier, also shares his experiences of maintaining these locomotives, and the author concludes by comparing them to the finest steam locomotives of France, Germany, and the USA.
Overall, this book provides a comprehensive and detailed account of Princess Coronation Pacific locomotives, their operation, and their preservation in the years following their retirement from service. It is a valuable addition to the literature on steam locomotives and will be of interest to enthusiasts and historians alike.
