  • More about The Loneliest Revolution: A Memoir of Solidarity and Struggle in Iran

Ali Mirsepassi's first-hand account of the Iranian revolutionary movement explores how a people united in solidarity and struggle ended up so divided. He deftly weaves together his insights as a sociologist of Iran with his memories of provincial life and radical activism in the 1960s and 1970s.

Format: Hardback
Length: 256 pages
Publication date: 31 March 2023
Publisher: Edinburgh University Press

Ali Mirsepassi's October 1978 experience, which began like any other day with anti-Shah protests, ended in near death when he was stabbed and dumped in a ditch on the outskirts of Tehran for speaking against Khomeini. In this account, Mirsepassi digs up painful memories to ask how the Iranian revolutionary movement came to this point and how a people united in solidarity and struggle ended up so divided. Mirsepassi deftly weaves together his insights as a sociologist of Iran with his memories of provincial life and radical activism in the 1960s and 1970s. He attentively observes the everyday struggles Iranians faced as they sought to learn about and make history despite state surveillance and censorship. The Loneliest Revolution revisits questions of leftist failure and Islamist victory and ultimately challenges us to probe the memories, personal and collective, that we leave unspoken.
