The Malay Archipelago is a captivating, momentous, and expansive narrative that chronicles Alfred Russel Wallace's eight-year exploration of South East Asia during the 1850s and 60s. Wallace's journey's led him to independently conceive of evolution through natural selection, a concept that he later shared with Charles Darwin. In 1858, they jointly presented their theories in a paper to the Linnean Society. During his travels, Wallace amassed an astonishing 125,660 specimens, including over 5,000 species that were previously unknown to Western science. This remarkable collection established him as the preeminent expert of the 19th century in the geographical distribution of animal species and as the father of biogeography. This elegant facsimile has been reproduced from Wallace's personal copy of the 10th edition, which includes numerous handwritten annotations made by Wallace himself. This edition was published 28 years after the first, and it incorporates additional information from subsequent collectors and footnotes where Wallace corrects some earlier errors. It features illustrations by contemporary artists such as Thomas Baines, Walter Hood Fitch, John Gerrard Keulemans, E. W. Robinson, Joseph Wolf, and T. W. Wood. Additionally, the book includes two fold-out color maps of the archipelago, one depicting the routes Wallace took during his expedition and the other showcasing the volcanic belts in the region. Furthermore, a new foreword by Sandra Knapp, President of the Linnean Society (2018-2022), has been added to this edition.
