The Paradox of Paradise delves into the evolution of urban coastal tourism in Spain from the late Franco era to the present, examining it through the lens of Spanish cultural production. "Sun-and-fun" destinations like Torremolinos and Benidorm, situated in the Costa del Sol and Costa Blanca, respectively, set a precedent for urban rejuvenation by physically constructing the coasts to accommodate and enhance foreign tourism, which was instrumental in the so-called Spanish Economic Miracle.

In addition to expanding the purview of Iberian urban studies to include the coasts (which have typically been dominated by studies of Madrid and Barcelona), this project pioneers by highlighting unexplored cultural artifacts that are crucial to understanding the development narrative along Spain's shores. Specifically, the ubiquitous tourist postcard plays a pivotal role in advancing the post-Franco economic miracle while simultaneously showcasing the transformative impact on the Spanish landscape.

The Paradox of Paradise presents a captivating collection of more than twenty-five striking images that capture the essence of coastal Spain as it undergoes its own remarkable transformation. Through the lens of photographer William Nichols, this project unveils a peculiar and self-aware archive, offering insights into our contemporary age of advertising as well as the hotels, resorts, and individuals showcased within these images.
