Alexander Pushkin is an extraordinary phenomenon, possibly the sole manifestation of the Russian spirit. Nikolai Gogol, a renowned writer, has selected his remarkable works, encompassing "The Queen of Spades," "The Stationmaster," and a collection of Pushkin's finest poetic masterpieces. In this captivating collection, a young man embarks on a mission to uncover a secret from an elderly countess, believing it will grant him immense fortune. "The Queen of Spades," Pushkin's prose masterpiece, is a gripping tale of avarice, obsession, madness, and cards. This splendid collection also features "The Stationmaster," a keenly observed story that delves into the lives of ordinary people; "The Bronze Horseman," a narrative poem that portrays the beauty and tragedy of a legendary rider; a selection of Pushkin's lyric poems that evoke emotions of love, longing, and nature; the ribald saga of Tsar Nikita and his Forty Daughters; and excerpts from "Yevgeny Onegin" and "Mozart and Salieri." This remarkable compilation serves as an ideal introduction to the incomparable Pushkin, the headspring of all Russian literature.
Part of the Pushkin Press Classics series, this collection showcases timeless storytelling by icons of literature, hand-picked from across the globe. Translated by Anthony Briggs, Alexander Pushkin (1799-1837) stands as one of Russia's greatest writers. At the age of fifteen, he published his first poem, and in 1820, his first long poem, "Ruslan and Lyudmila," propelled him to fame. His extensive oeuvre, including "The Queen of Spades," "Yevgeny Onegin," and the epic poem "The Bronze Horseman," has solidified his status as one of the greatest writers in history. Tragically, Pushkin passed away at the age of 37, after sustaining injuries in a duel.
