  • More about The Railways of Bradford and Leeds: Their History and Development

To the south-west of Leeds, the Middleton Railway established the principle of seeking parliamentary sanction for the construction of a new form of transport. In the early nineteenth century, it was again the Middleton Railway that was at the forefront of using steam-powered coal to move from colliery to market. The local railway network continued to expand until the outbreak of the First World War in 1914, when the Midland Railway planned and partially constructed a new main line north from Royston. The book includes a fascinating selection of illustrations that focus on the evolution of the network in the almost eighty years since the end of the Second World War.

The Middleton Railway played a pivotal role in the development of Britain's railway network, establishing the principle of seeking parliamentary sanction for constructing new forms of transport. Over five decades later, in the early nineteenth century, the Middleton Railway was again at the forefront of utilizing steam power to transport coal from colliery to market.

The local railway network experienced significant expansion from the early 1830s to the early years of the twentieth century. If it hadn't been for the outbreak of the First World War in 1914, the area would have hosted one of the last first-generation main lines constructed with the Midland Railway's plans, which included constructing a new main line north from Royston. However, the line was never completed, leaving Bradford to be served by glorified branch lines.

This book provides a comprehensive and illustrated account of the railway development in the area, focusing on the evolution of the network since the end of the Second World War. It includes a fascinating selection of illustrations that highlight the changes and advancements in the railway system over the past eighty years.

The Middleton Railway's contribution to the development of Britain's railway network was significant, and its legacy continues to be felt today. Its innovative use of steam power and its commitment to seeking parliamentary sanction for new transport forms set the stage for the expansion and development of the railway system in the country.
