At the onset of World War II in 1939, British agriculture relied heavily on the physical strength of men, women, and horses, employing predominantly nineteenth-century technology to produce less than half of the country's temperate food. By 1985, the land area dedicated to farming had significantly decreased, while the number of farmers involved had plummeted. The power sources and technologies employed had undergone a complete transformation, resulting in a more than twofold increase in agricultural output.

This narrative revolves around the national farm, encompassing the endeavors and experiences of approximately 200,000 farmers and their families, as well as the individuals they employed. However, it is important to note that this story does not pertain to any individual farmer in particular. We possess limited knowledge about change at the individual farm level, as the experiences varied considerably between farms and different technologies.
