After the passing of his master Gaofeng Yuanmiao, Zhongfeng Mingben (1263-1323) departed from Gaofeng's mountain and chose to live in solitude. For numerous years, he resided in various small mountain hermitages, often referred to as Dwelling-in-the-Phantasmal Hermitages, or houseboats. He attracted students from diverse regions across East Asia, including Yunnan, Turfan, Mongolia, Korea, Japan, and other places.
