The Red Sash is a captivating tale that takes place in the early 19th century, near the fur trading post of Fort William on Lake Superior. The story revolves around a young Metis boy named John, who lives with his father, a guide who leads voyageurs into the northwest to trade with Indigenous Peoples for furs during the long winter months.
As Rendezvous approaches, the voyageurs paddle back to Fort William with their precious cargo of furs, and North West Company canoes arrive from Montreal, carrying supplies for the upcoming season. It is a time of feasting, dancing, and storytelling around the campfire, where voyageurs exchange tales of their adventures and experiences.
One day, as preparations are underway for a grand feast in the Great Hall, John sets out on a hunting expedition to a nearby island. However, a storm soon begins to brew, and a canoe carrying a gentleman from the North West Company appears, seeking shelter from the raging waves. John bravely assists in landing the canoe, which has been torn apart by the rough waters.
In a selfless act of bravery, John paddles the gentleman across to Fort William in his own canoe, saving his life. As a token of gratitude, the gentleman presents John with a voyageur's red sash, a symbol of honor and recognition.
Jean E. Pendziwol, the author of The Red Sash, was inspired by her involvement with Fort William Historical Park as a volunteer. She collaborated closely with the Forts historian to ensure that the story is historically accurate and reflects the life and times of the early fur traders and Indigenous Peoples in the region.
The Red Sash is a beautifully written and illustrated book that seamlessly blends historical detail with a compelling narrative. It teaches readers about the rich cultural heritage of the Metis people and the significance of their interactions with the broader 19th-century fur trade. The book also emphasizes the importance of bravery, compassion, and community in a time of change and adversity.
Through its engaging storytelling and relatable characters, The Red Sash encourages readers to explore the complexities of history and to appreciate the diversity of cultures that have shaped our world. It is a valuable addition to the literature for children and adults alike, and it serves as a reminder of the importance of preserving our shared heritage and the stories that connect us to our past.
