Arthur Conan Doyle killed off Sherlock Holmes in 1893, but was tempted to bring him back ten years later in The Return of Sherlock Holmes. Doyle returned to Holmes in 1901-2 with The Hound of the Baskervilles and was contracted by Collier's Weekly to supply six more stories. These thirteen tales make up this volume.

Arthur Conan Doyle, the renowned author, famously bid farewell to Sherlock Holmes in 1893, with the short story "The Final Problem." However, his fascination with the character led him to resurrect him ten years later in the thirteen captivating tales found in "The Return of Sherlock Holmes." While the outcry surrounding Holmes' apparent demise was largely exaggerated, by 1893, there was a substantial readership for his two series of adventures published in the Strand Magazine and two earlier novels. Doyle's return to Holmes in 1901-2 was marked by "The Hound of the Baskervilles," a novel set before the events of "The Final Problem." The commercial success of the serialization in the Strand Magazine prompted Doyle to contemplate reviving the Holmes stories on a more enduring basis. As a result, in 1903, he was contracted by the American magazine Collier's Weekly to supply six additional Holmes stories. This agreement was subsequently extended to six more, culminating in a thirteenth story, "The Second Stain," which Doyle mistakenly believed to be the concluding episode of the Holmes adventures. These thirteen captivating tales form the essence of this remarkable volume.
