- More about The Rifle: Combat Stories from America's Last WWII Veterans, Told Through an M1 Garand
The Rifle is an inspirational story and heros journey of a 28-year-old U.S. Marine,Andrew Biggio, who returned home from combat in Afghanistan and Iraq, full of questions about the price of war. He found answers from those who survived the costliest war of all -- WWII veterans. Biggio bought a 1945 M1 Garand Rifle to honor his great uncle, a U.S. Army soldier who died on the hills of the Italian countryside. When he showed the gun to his neighbor, WWII veteran Corporal Joseph Drago, it unlocked memories Drago had kept unspoken for 50 years. Biggio asked Drago to sign the rifle, and thus began this Marines mission to find as many WWII veterans as he could, get their signatures on the rifle, and document their stories. For two years, Biggio traveled across the country to interview Americas last-living WWII veterans. 96 signatures now cover the rifle, each a reminder of the price of war and the courage of our soldiers.

The M1 Garand, an iconic rifle of World War II, holds a special place in the hearts of Americans who served during that era. In a remarkable tribute, an award-winning author embarks on a pilgrimage to honor heroism. He procures a 1945 M1 Garand Rifle, the most common weapon used in the war, with the intention of honoring his great uncle, a U.S. Army soldier who lost his life on the hills of the Italian countryside.
When the author presents the rifle to his neighbor, Corporal Joseph Drago, a World War II veteran, a flood of memories resurfaces, unspoken for half a century. Moved by the moment, the author asks Drago to sign the rifle, initiating a mission to connect with as many surviving World War II veterans as possible.
For two years, the author travels across the country, conducting interviews with the last living veterans of the war. As he hands over the M1 Garand Rifle, their eyes light up with nostalgia, as the weapon that accompanied them on every step of their journey becomes a tangible reminder of their sacrifices. With each visit and every story shared, the veterans proudly add their signatures to the rifle, symbolizing their unwavering courage and the profound cost of war.
Today, the rifle bears the imprint of 96 signatures, each a testament to the bravery and resilience of those who served. The M1 Garand Rifle stands as a powerful symbol of American combat and camaraderie in World War II, reminding us of the profound impact of heroism and the enduring legacy of our military heroes.
