  • More about The Routledge Companion to Architectural Pedagogies of the Global South

The established canon of architectural pedagogy has been predominantly produced within the Northern hemisphere and imposed on schools in the Global South, often without regard for social, economic, political, or ecological culture and context. The Routledge Companion to Architectural Pedagogies of the Global South resituates and recenters pedagogic approaches from the 'Global South, challenging the exclusionary implications of architectural notions of the 'orders, 'canon, and 'core. It argues that architectures academic and professional advancement is contingent on its ability to engage in an additive and inclusive process that leads to new, co-created knowledge. The book highlights the importance of notions such as tradition, identity, modernity, vernacularism, post-colonialism, poverty, migration, social and spatial justice, climate apartheid, globalization, ethical standards, and international partnerships in the context of the Global South. With contributions from 55 authors from diverse regional, racial, ethnic, gender, and cultural backgrounds, the companion provides educators and students with an essential source book of navigational steers, core contestations, propositional tactics, and reimagined rubrics. It pioneers a transposable strategy for academics from all disciplines looking to adopt a tested approach to decolonizing the curriculum.

The established canon of architectural pedagogy has been predominantly shaped within the Northern hemisphere and has been transposed, often with limited regard for social, economic, political, or ecological cultures and contexts, nor regional or indigenous pedagogic principles and practices, across schools in the Global South. This regime has had a profound impact on the architectural academic community throughout the Global South, shaping and influencing the development of proto-professionals and, by extension, architectural processes and outcomes.

The Routledge Companion to Architectural Pedagogies of the Global South seeks to reimagine and refocus a range of pedagogic approaches that originate or thrive from the 'Global South, challenging the linguistic, epistemological, and disciplinary assumptions that have perpetuated their marginalization or malignment under imperialist imperatives. The book maintains that the exclusionary implications of architectural notions such as 'orders,' 'canon,' and 'core' have constrained and calcified its contents, jeopardizing its relevance and impact. In contrast, this companion of pedagogic approaches aims to showcase that the advancement of architecture's academic and professional fields depends on its ability to engage in an additive and inclusive process that fosters necessary disruptions when marginalized knowledge confronts established knowledge. Through this catalytic transformation, new, co-created knowledge can emerge.

Key considerations in this companion include notions of tradition, identity, modernity, vernacularism, post-colonialism, poverty, migration, social and spatial justice, climate apartheid, globalization, ethical standards, and international partnerships. By examining these themes, the book aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of architectural pedagogy in the Global South and its potential for promoting equity, diversity, and sustainability in the field.
