- More about The Royal Irish Artillery In Martinique And Neighbouring Islands, 1794-96 Volume 1: Stepping To War
In 1794, 300 Royal Irish Artillery gunners landed in Martinique as part of an expedition led by General Grey and Admiral Jervis to remove the French controlling presence in the West Indies. Two years later, they numbered just 40 due to battles and diseases. Despite their skill and gallantry, most died and were buried away from their homeland. This two-volume history explores the build-up to the campaign, the French Revolution, and the abolition of slavery in France, which resulted in Irish gunners being taken from Ireland to further British military needs.

In 1794, a remarkable expedition was launched, led by General Grey and Admiral Jervis, with the aim of removing the French controlling presence in the West Indies. A total of 300 gunners of the Royal Irish Artillery landed in Martinique as part of this ambitious endeavor. However, the journey was not without its challenges. Two years later, after battles and diseases had taken their toll, the remaining gunners numbered just 40. Despite their exceptional skill and bravery, the majority of these soldiers tragically lost their lives and were buried far away from their homeland. It is high time that we pay proper respect and remember their sacrifices.
This first volume in our two-volume history delves into the buildup to this campaign. The French Revolution of 1789 brought about a seismic shift in society, reimagining it around principles of freedom and community. This transformation also sparked political turmoil and strife, ultimately leading to the declaration of war between France and Great Britain in 1793. In addition to deploying troops to the Continent, the British sought economic advantages through traditional means, waging war in their colonies. However, the turmoil in France had a profound impact on its colonies as well, resulting in a brief abolition of slavery.
Amidst these complex circumstances, Irish gunners, recently emancipated individuals, were recruited to serve a vital purpose. They were brought from Ireland to bolster the British forces, now arrayed against their former oppressors. The second volume in this series continues the story, recounting the thrilling and harrowing details of the campaign itself.
