The Shipwreck at Gnalić is a book that tells the story of the late Renaissance period through the individual human destinies uncovered at the site of the shipwreck. It was famous in the 1960s and 1970s but only recently has the scholarly community started collecting all the available information. The University of Zadar restarted the research in 2012 with the support of many institutions and organizations.

The Shipwreck at Gnalić offers a unique perspective on history, diverging from the traditional impersonal approach of official history. Instead, it delves into the individual human destinies that unfolded during the late Renaissance period across Europe and the Mediterranean. This captivating narrative is brought to life through the discovery of the shipwreck site, which played a pivotal role in connecting two seemingly opposing worlds.

The Gagliana grossa, formerly known as Lezza, Moceniga e Basadonna, was a vessel that traversed the permanent route between Venice and Constantinople, symbolically bridging two seemingly disparate yet intricately interconnected realms. During the 1960s and 1970s, the Gnalić shipwreck gained fame for the remarkable objects it held, which had spent four centuries at the bottom of the sea. However, it was only in recent years that the scholarly community has begun to gather and analyze the vast amount of information hidden in museum collections, at the shipwreck site, and in archives.

The authors of this publication have dedicated many years to this project, with the support of numerous domestic and foreign institutions and organizations. In 2012, the University of Zadar resumed the research, thanks to the invaluable contributions of these stakeholders. Astone Gasparetto initiated the reconstruction of ancient events in the 1970s, laying the foundation for this captivating journey. Subsequently, Mauro Bondioli took up the mantle, undertaking painstaking archival work at the State Archives in Venice. Through his diligent efforts, Bondioli uncovered hundreds of documents, piecing them together to form a multi-layered historical narrative. This narrative is summarized in the second part of the book, providing readers with a comprehensive understanding of the events that unfolded during the late Renaissance period.

The Shipwreck at Gnalić offers a profound exploration of history, shedding light on the lives and experiences of individuals who lived during this transformative era. Through its meticulous research and captivating storytelling, this book provides a valuable contribution to our understanding of the past and offers a glimpse into the rich tapestry of human history.
