Emotion is spatial, embedding us from without, transporting us somewhere else, or putting us ahead of ourselves. Ling Hon Lam's book explores the history of emotions in Chinese literature and culture, tracing how the emotion-realm underwent transformations from the dreamscape to theatricality in sixteenth- to eighteenth-century China. It challenges the conventional reading of Chinese literature as premised on interior subjectivity and examines historical changes in the spatial logic of performance through media and theater archaeologies.

Emotion, a multifaceted phenomenon, transcends the confines of an internal mental state and emerges as a spatial experience. It encompasses the capacity to embed individuals from the outside world, transport them to different realms, or propel them forward in time. In his groundbreaking book, Ling Hon Lam delves into the rich history of emotions in Chinese literature and culture, focusing on the concept of emotion as space, known as "emotion-realm" (qingjing) in Chinese. Through meticulous research, Lam traces the evolution of the emotion-realm from its medieval origins, characterized by dreamscapes that transported individuals into illusory moods, to its early modern manifestation as theatricality. In this transformation, the dreamer becomes a spectator, no longer immersed in endless oneiric layers but pausing to observe the dream.
By examining the genealogy of emotion-realms, Lam reimagines the Chinese histories of morals, theater, and knowledge production, revealing how they converged at the emergence of sympathy, which he redefines as the dissonance among the dimensions of the emotion-realm related to theatricality. This novel perspective challenges the conventional understanding of Chinese literature as solely rooted in interior subjectivity and explores historical shifts in the spatial logic of performance through media and theater archaeologies. Moreover, The Spatiality of Emotion in Early Modern China offers a fresh critical vocabulary to conceptualize history and existence, expanding our understanding of cultural phenomena on a global scale.
