The Guards Armoured Division, established in June 1941, showcased the remarkable adaptability of Household Troops as they embraced a wholly novel role. Their deployment to Normandy in 1944, under the command of Major General Sir Allan Adair, exemplified their exceptional performance in the costly Operation GOODWOOD. Following the breakout, the Welsh Guards liberated Brussels on September 3, and the Division played a pivotal role in Operation MARKET GARDEN. In early 1945, the Division engaged in Operation VERITABLE, successfully breaching General Schlemm's lateral line near Menzelen. The subsequent Rhine crossing saw the Guards Armoured leading XXX Corps towards Bremen and Hamburg. During this campaign, Guardsman Edward Charlton, serving with the Irish Guards, displayed remarkable bravery by thwarting a counter-attack and earning the prestigious Victoria Cross, the final VC awarded during the European war. The Story of The Guards Armoured Division serves as a testament to the Division's outstanding combat record, highlighting their unwavering dedication and bravery in the face of adversity.
