In early April 1982, the United Kingdom dispatched a Task Force to the South Atlantic to reclaim the Falkland Islands and South Georgia from Argentine occupation. Spanning a staggering distance of over 8,000 miles, this operation marked the second-longest amphibious journey from home base to objective in modern military history. On May 21, 3 Commando successfully landed at San Carlos on East Falklands, followed by a week-long victory over the Argentinian garrison at Goose Green. Within a week, 5 Infantry Brigade also arrived, successfully liberating Port Stanley against a numerically superior force by the middle of June.
The images presented here, nearly all previously unpublished, provide a visual depiction of the Argentinian occupation of the Falklands and offer an overview of the conditions in which both sides engaged in the land war. The Argentines primarily established their bases in Port Stanley and Goose Green on East Falkland, as well as Port Howard and Fox Bay on West Falklands. Author Nick van der Bijl, who was part of the British intelligence team during the conflict, possesses unseen Argentinian photographs, granting him a unique perspective on the conflict.
Van der Bijl delves into various aspects of the conflict, including the repatriation of prisoners and the current state of the Islands. His book, My Friends, The Enemy: Life in Military Intelligence During the Falkands War, offers a firsthand account of the events and insights into the workings of military intelligence during the pivotal period.
By presenting these unseen photographs and providing a comprehensive analysis, van der Bijl contributes significantly to our understanding of the Falklands War, offering a fresh perspective that sheds light on the events and challenges faced by both sides during this historic conflict.
