Quranic idiomaticity presents a significant challenge to Quran readers, learners, commentators, and translators in all its aspects. One of the most challenging aspects of Quranic idiomaticity is the phenomenon of Quranic idiomatic phrasal verbs, where the meanings of proper Arabic verbs are entirely fused with the meanings of prepositions following them to create new meanings that have nothing to do with the basic meanings of those verbs and prepositions.
To explore this phenomenon, this study examines a corpus of ten of the most influential English translations of the Quran. It scrutinizes how some translators of the Quran have dealt with the challenges of translating Quranic idiomatic phrasal verbs, the difficulties they have encountered, and the strategies they have employed to overcome the inherent ambiguity of such expressions and provide their functional-pragmatic equivalents for English readership.
The study proposes a working model for analyzing and assessing the translation of Quranic idiomatic phrasal verbs and provides a number of theory-based recommendations for translators in general and Quran translators in particular.
In conclusion, Quranic idiomaticity presents a complex and challenging aspect of the Quran that requires careful consideration and translation. By examining the translation of Quranic idiomatic phrasal verbs in a corpus of influential English translations, this study provides valuable insights into the strategies and challenges faced by translators in conveying the meanings of these expressions to English readers. The study's proposed working model and theory-based recommendations can serve as a guide for translators working with the Quran and other languages that exhibit similar idiomatic phenomena.
