The Way of the Worm marks the triumphant conclusion of Campbell's cosmic trilogy. This book, the third installment in the Three Births of Daoloth trilogy, takes place in the present day or a similar era. Dominic Sheldrake, once a renowned lecturer, has retired and lives alone. His son, Toby, is married and has a young daughter named Macy. The occultist Noble family, known for their activities, are more active than ever before. Their cult, now openly known as the Church of the Eternal Three, has spread worldwide. The local branch of the church occupies the top floors of Starview Tower, a prominent skyscraper on the Liverpool waterfront. To Dominic's dismay, Toby and his wife, Claudine, are deeply involved in the church, and he suspects that they are also involving Macy in their activities.
Despite his reservations, Dominic attends a meeting of the church, where he encounters all three generations of the Noble family. Christian Noble, who is almost a century old, appears surprisingly vigorous and inhumanly so. The family takes turns delivering apocalyptic sermons that hint at dark secrets concealed within the Bible and foretell a future that awaits. Intrigued by the church's offerings, Dominic undergoes a rite that grants him the ability to travel psychically through time. However, before he can return to the present, he experiences a vision of the monstrous fate that awaits the world.
Dominic discovers a secret that he believes the Nobles will do everything to keep hidden. Although he has retired from the police, Jim, a former colleague, assists him in uncovering the truth. Roberta, Dominic's friend, publishes the information on her online blog, sparking a court case. Initially, it seems as though the Nobles have been defeated, but they return in a dreadfully transformed state. Now, Dominic and his friends find themselves at the mercy of the Nobles, and it becomes unclear if there is any safe haven in the world to escape their wrath.
Despite their best efforts, the Nobles seem to have an endless supply of resources and power. They exert their influence on governments, organizations, and individuals, causing chaos and destruction wherever they go. The world is plunged into a state of uncertainty, and it becomes clear that the only way to stop the Nobles is to confront them head-on. Dominic and his friends embark on a perilous journey to confront the Nobles and bring an end to their reign of terror. They face numerous challenges and obstacles along the way, but their determination and courage never waver.
In the end, Dominic and his friends are able to defeat the Nobles and bring peace to the world. The church is dismantled, and the Noble family is brought to justice. Dominic emerges as a hero, hailed for his bravery and determination in the face of overwhelming odds. The world is left in ruins, but the hope for a better future remains.
The Way of the Worm is a thrilling and epic conclusion to Campbell's cosmic trilogy. It explores themes of power, corruption, and the ultimate battle between good and evil. The characters are well-developed, and the plot is intricate and compelling. This book is a must-read for fans of science fiction and fantasy literature.
