In 1864, a destitute Welsh lad named William Pritchard Morgan embarked on an ambitious journey to Australia, driven by a burning desire to forge his fortune. Upon his return, he emerged as a prosperous lawyer and aspiring politician, having utilized his amassed wealth to invest in gold mines and pioneer innovative methods for gold recovery. However, his political aspirations in Australia met with setbacks. The newspaper he used to promote himself became entangled in a sensational trial involving another editor, and a man was even shot while collecting his votes. Morgan claimed that these incidents were evidence of his unsuccessful political endeavors in Australia. Deciding to return home, he set his sights on mining Welsh gold, determined to overcome the challenges he had encountered.

After ousting the dominant figures of the 1860s Little Gold Rush, Morgan swiftly assumed control of Gwynfynydd, one of the region's most lucrative mines. He stood as an independent Member of Parliament (MP) for Merthyr, proudly boasting of a magnificent seam of gold that he believed could single-handedly wipe out the national debt. Overnight, he became the revered Welsh Gold King, earning the title of Merthyr's MP. Despite the immense success of his mines, the government imposed heavy taxes on Morgan, nearly crippling his business. Refusing to pay, he faced legal action from the government, resulting in a highly publicized trial that had the potential to revolutionize mining practices in Britain.

The Welsh Gold King was a generous philanthropist, bestowing gifts upon numerous prominent individuals, including royalty. He also championed the tradition of all royal brides adorning wedding rings crafted from Welsh gold. His liberal politics, ahead of their time, often stirred controversy among his contemporaries. However, Morgan's extraordinary character played a pivotal role in the history of gold mining in Wales. His unwavering determination, entrepreneurial spirit, and visionary leadership left an indelible mark on the industry, ensuring his legacy as a true mining pioneer.
