Tracy Young presents a fresh take on Shakespeare's intricate tale of jealousy and redemption, The Winters Tale. This play delves into the depths of human emotions, exploring the consequences of extreme jealousy and the power of redemption.

Shakespeare's The Winters Tale is a profound exploration of rebirth and redemption, driven by the intense jealousy of Leontes, the King of Sicily. Accusing his wife Hermione of infidelity and ordering the abandonment of their newborn daughter, Leontes sets in motion a series of events that will forever alter their lives.

Sixteen years later, Leontes is forced to confront the consequences of his rash decisions. In Tracy Young's version of The Winters Tale, the theatergoing experience is transformed from Shakespeare's time to ours. This translation updates Shakespeare's language, wordplay, and wit to engage modern audiences in a way that would have been possible in the early modern theater.

The Winters Tale was written as part of the Oregon Shakespeare Festival's Play On! project, which commissioned new translations of thirty-nine Shakespeare plays. The goal of this project was to reimagine Shakespeare for the twenty-first century, making his works accessible to modern audiences while preserving the beauty of his verse.

A diverse group of contemporary playwrights, screenwriters, and dramaturges collaborated on this project, each bringing their unique perspective to the translations. The result is a collection of volumes that presents Shakespeare's works in print for the first time, creating a new First Folio for a new era.

Tracy Young's version of The Winters Tale is a testament to the enduring power of Shakespeare's plays. It offers a fresh perspective on a timeless tale, reminding us of the importance of forgiveness, redemption, and the healing power of love. Through her skillful translation, Young brings Shakespeare's words to life in a way that resonates with contemporary audiences, making his plays relevant and accessible to a new generation.
