The remarkable life of Peter Townsend, equerry to King George VI, hero of the Battle of Britain, and the man considered to be the great love of Princess Margaret's life.

A Royal fairy tale, Sunday Telegraph

One of the saddest love stories of modern times, The Scotsman

Peter Townsend was a dashing war hero, Anne Glenconner writes in her new book, A Royal Fairytale: The Extraordinary Life and Loves of Peter Townsend. The handsome young officer, who served in the Royal Air Force during World War II, was known for his bravery and skill on the battlefield. He was also a skilled horseman and a devoted sportsman, enjoying polo, golf, and hunting.

But it was his relationship with Princess Margaret that would capture the hearts of the world. The two met in 1934 at a polo match, and they were immediately drawn to each other. They were married in 1955, and their marriage was a fairytale wedding that was broadcast around the world. The couple had two children, Peter and David, and they were devoted to each other throughout their marriage.

However, their happiness was not to last. The couple's marriage began to unravel in the late 1960s, and they divorced in 1978. Peter Townsend went on to have a series of relationships, including a long-term relationship with actress Joan Collins. Princess Margaret, on the other hand, remained single until her death in 2002.

Despite their divorce, Peter Townsend remained close to Princess Margaret and her family. He was a frequent visitor to her home in Scotland and was a pallbearer at her funeral in 2002. Peter Townsend's life was a remarkable tale of love, bravery, and adventure. He was a true hero of the Battle of Britain and a devoted husband and father. His legacy continues to inspire people around the world.
