The Black and Tans raid on a woman's house caused her to lose the power of her left side, which resulted in her never seeing her mother walk. This event is a significant part of Irish history and is explored in the book "The Time of the Tans" through oral history recordings and private family collections. The majority of interviewees have since passed away, but their memories have been preserved for posterity, giving new life to an important period in modern Irish history.

The Black and Tans, a notorious paramilitary group, carried out a raid on the residence of my aunt, where my mother was peacefully resting in her bed at the early hour of three o'clock in the morning. I was due to be born just three days later. Tragically, my mother suffered a stroke of paralysis, resulting in the loss of power on her left side. As a result, I never had the privilege of witnessing my mother walk. She relied on a chair for mobility.

These harrowing tales of the Black and Tans have been recounted throughout Ireland since the group's deployment in March 1920. Their shadowy presence casts a dark and enduring aura, evoking deep emotions and memories. For those who lived through the tumultuous period and those who have inherited the associated stories, the Black and Tans symbolize British repression, violence, and malevolence. The Irish War of Independence holds a significant place in the chronology of Irish history, leaving a profound impact on every aspect of society. Unfortunately, much of that experience remains undocumented.

"The Time of the Tans" is a groundbreaking work that sheds light on a period that has dominated the historical consciousness of Ireland. Drawing upon nearly two decades of oral history recordings, meticulously selected from over 400 interviews, as well as access to private family collections, this book offers a captivating glimpse into the stories of that era. The narratives are rich with emotion, ranging from the direct testimony of 105-year-old Margaret Hoey to the inherited tradition of Flan OBrien, born in 1927. Each story pulsates with a profound intensity that adds depth and resonance to this important period in modern Irish history.

It is worth noting that the majority of the interviewees who generously shared their experiences for this research have since passed away. However, their memories, meticulously preserved for posterity, have been given new life. Through this book, their stories continue to resonate, providing a valuable contribution to our understanding of Ireland's past.

The Time of the Tans serves as a testament to the resilience and determination of the Irish people during a period of immense turmoil. It reminds us of the importance of preserving our history, so that future generations can learn from our past mistakes and strive for a better future. This book is a valuable addition to the literature on Irish history and should be read by anyone interested in understanding the complexities of this fascinating period.
