Tios/Tieion was envisioned as a publication that would capture the proceedings of a conference that was originally scheduled to be held in Filyos (ancient Tios/Tieion) in 2020. Unfortunately, like many other events, the conference had to be canceled due to the impact of COVID-19. However, there was a glimmer of hope that it might still take place in the future, fueled by the unwavering enthusiasm of Gocha Tsetskhladze, one of the co-organizers. Regrettably, this hope was dashed when Tsetskhladze tragically passed away, prematurely undermining the prospects of the conference.
In lieu of the original conference, we have assembled a volume titled "Precedings," which was written at a time when the idea of the conference was still fresh in our minds. Several of the papers in this volume delve into various aspects of Tios itself, including the Acropolis, the Lower City, and Coin Finds. These scholarly contributions were written by individuals who were actively involved in the excavation efforts.
Before exploring the indigenous inhabitants of the surrounding area, the immediate and greater region (Paphlagonian Hadrianopolis, Hadrian's visit to the region, the nature of the Phrygian kingdom), we take a moment to consider Tios' place in ancient geography and cartography. This sets the stage for our subsequent exploration of the Turkish Black Sea region, which encompasses a rich tapestry of historical and cultural landmarks.
We begin by delving into the rock-cut tunnels, Roman Heraclea Pontica, and the St. John Chrysostoms Monastery in the Turkish Black Sea region. These sites provide valuable insights into the architectural and artistic heritage of this region, which has been influenced by a diverse range of cultural influences over the centuries.
Moving outward, we examine the western, northern, and eastern shores of the Black Sea, their inhabitants, and the hinterlands that surround them. This includes a comprehensive examination of monumental architecture in the temenos of Apollonbn/ia Pontica, the discovery of Archaic Greek transport amphorae in the Getic hinterland, the early Greek pottery found in settlements and burials in the northern Black Sea region, the remarkable house of Pythes at Berezan, the Sindoi, religious customs at Tarasova Balka, the Mordvinovskii Barrow, and finally, the presence of Greeks and locals in Pichvnari in Colchis.
Overall, this volume comprises 21 chapters and features the contributions of 27 authors, hailing from Turkey, Russia, Georgia, Bulgaria, and other countries. Their diverse perspectives and expertise contribute to a rich and comprehensive understanding of the historical and cultural significance of Tios and its surrounding regions.
