Since the 1970s, Irish Jesuit Brian OLeary has been delving into and producing works on Ignatian spirituality. He has written five books, with the most recent one, God Ever Greater, published in 2018, being a compilation of his lectures and talks. His most recent work, To Love and To Serve, is a compilation of essays that have been published in spirituality journals in several countries. OLeary decided to compile the finest of his work in this genre into one book, making it more widely available because these essays are not readily available. The essays cover a wide range of topics, purposes, and styles, with some being brief and intended for a general audience, while others are more scholarly or geared toward practitioners of Ignatian spirituality. All of the essays are highly readable and exhibit excellent clarity of style.
While the Spiritual Exercises are most commonly associated with Ignatian spirituality, OLeary's writings also include a number of pieces on the Jesuit Constitutions, a spiritual classic that is surprisingly relevant outside its original context. The Constitutions are frequently quoted today in the context of spiritual formation and leadership. Additionally, there are intriguing questions surrounding St. Ignatius Loyola himself, particularly his mysticism. What would such mysticism look like if lived out in the post-modern world? The range of topics covered in OLeary's works is remarkable.
