- More about Totus noster?: Augustinus zwischen den Konfessionen
The focus of interest is on Augustine, the most important church father of the early church, who had authority throughout the Middle Ages and modern times. This anthology documents and discusses Augustine's subject in a broader context, considering the denominational interests and perspectives of the researchers. A trans- and inter-confessional approach that takes these interferences into account promises methodological progress and new insights in terms of content.

Augustine, widely regarded as the most influential church father of the early church, holds a central place of fascination. No figure wielded such authority throughout the Middle Ages and even in modern times. This applies to crucial theological disciplines such as sacramental and grace theology, historical theology, ecclesiology, and anthropology, which are of utmost importance for theology. It seems that no serious theologian could bypass Augustine's profound insights. This holds even more true for the disputes that unfolded during the Reformation. To put it bluntly, without Augustine, the theologies of the Reformation would likely not have emerged. Every theologian referred to him, and yet this sometimes led to different theological perspectives. However, the subject of Augustine, which is documented and discussed in this anthology, stands in a broader context, on which a group of scholars, including Peter Walter, who tragically passed away far too early, have been contemplating for an extended period. These considerations are rooted in the observation, which cannot be disputed, that research into early modern theological historiography continues to be influenced by the denominational interests and perspectives of the researchers. Naturally, this circumstance contrasts with the fact that similar debates and parallel developments have occurred in all denominational theological knowledge cultures, and that there have often been interactions or mutual influences. Therefore, a trans- and inter-confessional approach that explicitly accounts for these interferences promises methodological advancements and fresh insights in terms of content.
