Karl-Otto Apel's book "Towards a Transformation of Philosophy" explores the relationship between language, history, and truth, discussing the hermeneutic dimension of Wittgenstein's philosophy and the development of pragmatism. It argues for the complementarity of technical and practical interests in acquiring knowledge for a critical theory of society and examines the preconditions for an emancipatory critique of ideology and the communication community.

Karl-Otto Apel's Towards a Transformation of Philosophy is a collection of selected essays originally published in 1973 in German under the title Transformation der Philosophie. Apels' work in philosophy and the social sciences bridged the gap between the Anglo-Saxon traditions of analytical philosophy of language and pragmatism and the philosophical traditions of the European continent, including phenomenology, existentialism, and hermeneutics. He emphasized the crucial role of language in the constitution of historical meaning and its historical condition for the possibility of truth. Apel discussed the hermeneutic dimension of Wittgenstein's philosophy and its followers, as well as the development of pragmatism and recent trends in Chomskys linguistics.
In his exploration of knowledge acquisition for a critical theory of society, Apel argued for the complementarity of technical and practical interests. He examined the preconditions for an emancipatory critique of ideology and the communication community, recognizing them as the predeterminate of both the social sciences and moral discourse. Throughout all the essays, Apel sought to counter the positivistic and scientistic restrictions placed upon a satisfactory understanding of the preconditions for the possibility and validity of human knowledge. This book is a valuable resource for scholars and researchers in philosophy.
