- More about Transatlantic Central Europe: Contesting Geography and Redifining Culture Beyond the Nation
The term Central Europe has lost its political and intellectual significance, and the liberal humanist philosophy that once evoked it has been replaced by economic liberalism and neoliberal policies. This book explores the transnational set of practices connecting journals with other media in the mid-1980s, disseminating the idea of Central Europe simultaneously in East and West. It uses new methodologies such as GIS-mapping visualization to reposition the political-cultural journal as a central node of a larger cultural system.

Central Europe, once a politically and intellectually charged term, has lost its prominence in recent years. Proponents of a distinct cultural profile for these countries have used Central European to challenge the geo-political label of Eastern Europe. This book explores the transnational practices connecting journals with other media in the mid-1980s, disseminating the idea of Central Europe simultaneously in East and West. It employs new methodologies, such as GIS-mapping visualization, to reposition the political-cultural journal as a central node in a larger cultural system. However, the liberal humanist philosophy that Central Europe once evoked has been replaced by an economic liberalism that has led to neoliberal policies and practices. The author traces the concept's trajectory into the present day, examining its material and intellectual traces in the postcommunist landscape. She also explores how the current use of transnational, web-based media follows the logic and practice of an earlier, dissident generation of writers.
