This book reveals an ongoing hegemonic struggle over the representation of Europe among ‘many Europes’ involving two separate integrationist models of regionalization –or ‘Europe-making’– and two distinct dynamics that have sought to fragment and de-centre the European Union through nationalism and globalism respectively.

Format: Hardback
Length: 150 pages
Publication date: 28 November 2022
Publisher: Taylor & Francis Ltd

The question "How many Europes?" has sparked numerous attempts to analyze European crises and transformations on a global scale. This book expands on the notion that Europe cannot be reduced to a singular dynamic, identity, or vision but rather presents a four-fold taxonomy: Thin, Thick, Parochial, and Global Europe. The contributors to this book aim to address the growing need to incorporate both the parochial dynamics that are undermining Europe and the globalist dynamics that are decentering Europe into the analysis of European crises and transformations across various sectors, including security and foreign policy, rule of law, and democracy. In light of the severe crises facing the EU, such as Brexit, the Syrian refugee crisis, Catalan secessionism, the rise of far-right movements, and terrorism, this book unpacks Europe in a time of profound upheaval. It reveals an ongoing hegemonic struggle over the representation of Europe among "many Europes," involving two distinct integrationist models of regionalization: "Europe-making" and "Europe-fragmenting." Additionally, it highlights two distinct dynamics that have sought to fragment and de-center the European Union through nationalism and globalism, respectively.

The chapters in this book were originally published as a special issue of "European Politics and Society."
