- More about Transhumanism, Ethics and the Therapeutic Revolution: Agents of Change
The impact of developments in pharmaceutical medicine in the twentieth century on a Christian ethical evaluation of transhumanism and future 'hi tech medical enhancement technologies' is explored. It suggests that the Christian ethical assessment of proposed future radical transhumanist biomedical technologies should be conducted in the light of responses to past medical advances, with two specific case studies focusing on the oral contraceptive pill and Prozac and SSRI antidepressants. An ethical framework is proposed for assessing novel biomedical technologies according to their effects on personal autonomy, embodiment, and bodily life, and on the imago Dei.

Exploring the profound impact of advancements in pharmaceutical medicine throughout the twentieth century on a Christian ethical evaluation of transhumanism and future 'hi-tech medical enhancement technologies is the focus of this comprehensive study. It suggests that a Christian ethical assessment of proposed future radical transhumanist biomedical technologies should be approached in the context of responses to past medical advances.
To illustrate this point, two specific case studies are presented, delving into the oral contraceptive pill and the Prozac and SSRI antidepressants. These case studies serve as valuable examples of how medical advancements have shaped our understanding of human health and well-being.
The author then proposes an ethical framework for assessing novel biomedical technologies based on their effects on personal autonomy, embodiment, and bodily life, as well as on the imago Dei, the concept of human beings created in the image of God. This framework aims to provide a comprehensive and balanced approach to evaluating these technologies, considering their potential benefits and risks while upholding Christian values and principles.
By examining the historical and ethical implications of pharmaceutical medicine, this study offers valuable insights into the complex relationship between technology, medicine, and religion. It encourages Christians and other stakeholders to engage in thoughtful and informed discussions about the future of medical enhancement technologies, ensuring that they align with ethical and moral principles that uphold the dignity and value of human life.
