  • More about Tripolye Typo-chronology: Mega and Smaller Sites in the Sinyukha River Basin

The Tripolye phenomenon is a specific artefact complex and settlement layout in modern Ukraine, with five of the largest 'mega or giant settlements measuring 150-320 ha. This study reconstructs the Tripolye chronology in the Sinyukha Basin and its surrounding areas, focusing on the ceramics as one of the main sources for typo-chronologies. The results provide a new view on the appearance, functions, and end of Tripolye and large sites.

The Tripolye phenomenon, renowned for its distinctive artifact complex and remarkable settlement layout, is also recognized for its so-called 'mega sites.' Among these, five of the largest 'mega or giant settlements' span an impressive area of 150 to 320 hectares. These remarkable settlements, along with other significant ones, are concentrated in the Sinyukha River Basin, a vital part of modern-day Ukraine. In this region, over 100 different Tripolye sites have been identified.

Understanding the chronology of this region is crucial in unraveling not only the 'mega-site phenomenon' but also the broader dynamics of spatial development within the Tripolye phenomenon. This study specifically focuses on reconstructing the Tripolye chronology in the Sinyukha Basin and its surrounding areas, encompassing the chronology of individual mega-sites, the periodization of spatial Tripolye distribution, the evolution of ceramic styles, the lifespan of individual sites, and the temporal and spatial development of Tripolye settlements.

One of the primary sources for typo-chronologies in this study is ceramics, which hold immense significance in providing insights into the appearance, functions, and eventual decline of Tripolye and large sites in general. The findings derived from this research offer a fresh perspective on the emergence, roles, and ultimate fate of Tripolye and sizable settlements.
