Between 1940 and 1945, the Chevrolet Motor Division of General Motors delivered a significant number of trucks to the U.S. Army. Over 160,000 of these trucks were the G-506 light four-wheel drive trucks, which became the standard 1 1/2-ton, 4x4 truck for both the U.S. Army and Army Air Corps during the war. In addition, many more thousands were delivered to Allied forces as part of the Lend-Lease program, including nearly 50,000 delivered to the Soviet Union. Tough, well-built, and more agile than the deuce and a half, the Chevy 1½-ton played a part in every theater of operations during the war. Its durability and mechanical reliability made it ideal for a wide range of missions. Not for nothing did Chevy advertise the trucks during the war as "Vehicles of victory."

More than 75 years after it was designed, the small Chevrolet truck is still a favorite with collectors. This fully illustrated book details the different series of trucks and their many uses within the U.S. Army, including cargo trucks, panel delivery trucks for the Signal Corps, dump trucks for engineers, telephone trucks, tractors, bomb service trucks for the air force, and their part in the Lend-Lease program. It also covers their continued use after the war.

The G-506 light four-wheel drive truck was a versatile and reliable vehicle that played a crucial role in the U.S. Army's efforts during World War II. Its durability and mechanical reliability made it ideal for a wide range of missions, from cargo transportation to combat support. The truck's small size and agility also allowed it to navigate through difficult terrain, making it a valuable asset in both offensive and defensive operations.

One of the most notable features of the G-506 was its ability to carry heavy loads over long distances. The truck was designed with a sturdy frame and suspension system that could handle rough terrain and heavy loads, making it an ideal choice for transporting supplies and equipment to front-line troops. The truck's four-wheel drive system also provided excellent traction and stability, even in adverse weather conditions.

In addition to its military applications, the G-506 also played a significant role in civilian life after the war. The truck's popularity continued to grow, and it became a symbol of American ingenuity and innovation. Many of the trucks were used for farming, construction, and other commercial purposes, and they remained in use for many years.

Despite its many contributions to the war effort, the G-506 was not without its flaws. The truck's engine was relatively small and underpowered, which made it difficult to carry heavy loads over long distances. Additionally, the truck's design was outdated by the end of the war, and it was replaced by newer and more advanced models.

Despite these shortcomings, the G-506 remains a significant part of American military history. Its durability, reliability, and versatility made it an ideal vehicle for a wide range of military applications, and its continued popularity after the war demonstrates the enduring impact of this iconic truck. This fully illustrated book provides a detailed account of the G-506's history, design, and use within the U.S. Army, and it is a valuable resource for anyone interested in military history or automotive engineering.
