- More about Ugo Rondinone: The Sun
Ugo Rondinone's Sun paintings are a series of works that reflect his interests in nineteenth-century German Romanticism and Tibetan mysticism. They began in 1992 and span three decades, exploring natural phenomena and interior states. Rondinone began by directing his gaze inward, translating his emotional state to circular bands of watercolour on paper. He then altered the media and scale, expanding the Suns to more than seven feet in diameter and exchanging tremulous watercolour for seamless airbrush. The paintings fill the viewer's field of vision with pulsing colour, and the book includes reproductions of all 271 large works and 164 smaller canvases and prints.

Swiss-born conceptual artist Ugo Rondinone is renowned for his Sun paintings, which are among his most celebrated series. These works, which began in 1992 and span three decades, reflect Rondinone's interests in nineteenth-century German Romanticism and Tibetan mysticism. The Sun works serve as a means to explore natural phenomena and interior states.
Rondinone began the Sun series by directing his gaze inward, translating his emotional state into circular bands of watercolour on paper. To create distance between these diaristic studies and the viewer, he then altered the media and scale, expanding the Suns to more than seven feet in diameter and exchanging tremulous watercolour for seamless airbrush. Maintaining a consistent form and naming strategy, Rondinone cycled through more than 435 colour combinations, each specific to a day, ranging from strong contrasts to barely perceptible shifts. These works are sometimes referred to as mandala works, as they fill the viewer's field of vision with pulsing colour.
At 19 x 22 inches, this elephant folio creates an intense optical experience at close range. Ugo Rondinone: The Sun is the most comprehensive source on the series to date, featuring reproductions of all 271 large works and 164 smaller canvases and prints.
