  • More about Uisneach or the Center of Ireland

The hill of Uisneach lies almost exactly at the geographical center of Ireland, and it was a sacred hill in Irish mythology and the Celtic world. In the early 21st century, a Fire Festival was held on Uisneach in connection with the festival of Bealtaine, attended by Michael D. Higgins, the current president of Ireland, who lit the fire of Uisneach on 6 May 2017. This book argues that the symbolic significance of the hill has echoed the evolution of Irish society through time, in political, spiritual, and religious terms, or, perhaps more accurately, in terms of identity and Irishness.

The hill of Uisneach, situated nearly in the geographical heart of Ireland, holds a remarkable significance that was, at least in part, recognized by the ancient Irish population. Undoubtedly, the place of Uisneach in Irish mythology and, more broadly, the Celtic world, holds paramount importance. Uisneach can be best described as a sacred hill, possibly the most sacred hill in Ireland, situated at the center of the country.

Throughout the centuries, various medieval documents have shed light on the hill and its connections. These documents, when compared with archaeological findings and contemporary Irish folklore, provide a rich tapestry of information about Uisneach. In the early 21st century, a unique Fire Festival began to take place on Uisneach, coinciding with the festival of Bealtaine in early May. This festival, perhaps aimed at reviving ancient traditions, saw the participation of Michael D. Higgins, the current president of Ireland, who lit the fire of Uisneach on May 6, 2017.

This book makes a compelling argument that the symbolic significance of Uisneach has resonated with the evolution of Irish society across time. Its impact extends to political, spiritual, and religious realms, as well as to the broader concept of identity and Irishness. This work is of utmost interest to scholars and advanced students in the fields of cultural history, Irish history, and cultural studies.
