Driven by the ever-growing demand for mobile data, cellular networks have undergone a remarkable transformation, evolving from small cell networks to ultra-dense heterogeneous networks. This shift is driven by the need to provide high system capacity and spectrum efficiency. By bringing base stations (BSs) to the approximate spatial scale and number magnitude, ultra-dense heterogeneous networks promise to bring about unprecedented paradigm changes in network design.
Firstly, the densification of small cells in ultra-dense heterogeneous networks has led to severe inter-cell interference, which can negatively impact the performance of mobile users. As a result, assigning network resources, including bandwidth and time slots, while minimizing interference, becomes a critical concern. This requires careful consideration of network design and optimization techniques to ensure seamless communication and efficient mobility management.
Secondly, the coverage area of BSs in ultra-dense heterogeneous networks becomes small and irregular, resulting in frequent and complicated handovers when mobile users move around. Ensuring continuous communication and implementing effective mobility management, as well as inter-cell resource allocation and cooperation, remains a challenging issue that requires innovative solutions.
Thirdly, the dynamic change in spatial dimension enables us to re-examine available and ongoing communications and networking techniques, such as massive MIMO, cooperative communication, millimeter waves (mmWaves), carrier aggregation, full duplex radio, and direct-to-device (D2D) communications. This book aims to investigate the service and quality of experience (QoE) provisioning in ultra-dense heterogeneous networks.
In particular, the book will introduce ultra-dense heterogeneous networks by carefully defining their spatial deployment, generic characteristics, and requirements to ensure the QoE of mobile users. It will then depict the resource management among small cells in close proximity, mobility management for mobile users (addressing the super-frequent handovers), and interference management.
