Since the 1970s, visual artists have been exploring and challenging the concept of masculinity, and their work continues to evolve and grow. This publication is a tribute to these changes, highlighting the diverse artistic approaches that artists have taken to redefine masculinity. Contributions from art and cultural studies shed light on the process by which the notion of a singular, unchanging masculinity is being replaced by the recognition of a multitude of masculinities.

The volume is organized into four sections:

Postphallic Masculinity: This section examines the ways in which traditional notions of masculinity are being challenged and subverted. Artists explore the idea that male bodies are not fixed or inherent but are shaped by social and cultural norms. They challenge the idea that masculinity is solely defined by physical strength and aggression and instead present a more nuanced and diverse understanding of what it means to be a man.

Queering Masculinities: This section explores the ways in which gender and sexuality are intertwined with notions of masculinity. Artists explore the complexities of gender identity and the ways in which it can be expressed and challenged. They challenge the binary of male and female and present a more fluid and inclusive understanding of gender.

Optimized Masculinity/ies: This section examines the ways in which technology and media are shaping perceptions of masculinity. Artists explore the ways in which men are represented and marketed in popular culture and challenge the idea that masculinity is solely defined by physical appearance and performance.

Vulnerability: This section explores the ways in which men are often socialized to suppress their emotions and vulnerabilities. Artists challenge this notion by presenting men as complex and multifaceted individuals capable of expressing a range of emotions.

Through their work, visual artists have contributed to a broader understanding of masculinity and its impact on society. They have challenged traditional notions of gender and sexuality and presented a more inclusive and diverse vision of what it means to be a man. This publication serves as a valuable resource for artists, scholars, and anyone interested in exploring the changing landscape of masculinity.
