The Bronze Age spread throughout Europe, transforming various sectors, networks, worldviews, and societies. This book explores the transformations that occurred during the Bronze Age in Schleswig-Holstein, focusing on the Mang de Bargen site.
Located in Bornhöved (Segeberg County), the Mang de Bargen site was once a quarry used for mining. However, it has now become one of the most well-documented Bronze Age sites in Schleswig-Holstein. The graveyard was in use from the Late Neolithic period to the early Iron Age, serving as a burial ground.
During this long period of use, several cultural changes can be observed, such as burial rituals, grave furnishings, and other activities. The consistent dating of nearly all graves allows for precise identification of key transitions, such as the shift from body to cremation burials and the introduction of urns in North Germany.
Anthropological analyses of the burnt remains from Mang de Bargen and other sites in the region provide valuable insights into age-related placement and burial practices. These findings spark new discussions about societal structures and hierarchies.
A comparison with environmental data (archaeobotany and palynology) further highlights the human impact compared to archaeological investigations. Integrating data from graveyards, gardens, and settlements across Schleswig-Holstein enables a comprehensive understanding of how transformations unfolded at different levels, from local to regional and even transnational scales.
In Band II, the book includes detailed tables and illustrations that complement the research findings.
