Loubna Mrie, a Syrian Alawite, was raised in a staunchly supportive environment of the Syrian President Hafez al-Assad, sharing the same sect as him. Her mother's father played a pivotal role in orchestrating the coup that resulted in Hafez's ascent to power in 1970, effectively bringing the Alawites out of hiding and granting them complete control. Loubna's father, who held an intimate position within Hafez's government, served as an enforcer and assassin, deeply involved in the regime's activities.
However, when the Arab Spring reached Syria in 2011, Loubna's perspective on her life took a drastic turn. Driven by curiosity, she attended a protest against the government of Bashar al-Assad, a decision that would forever alter the course of her existence. Upon returning to her grandparents' home in Damascus, her family labeled her a traitor, unable to forgive her for her involvement. Despite the immense pain and betrayal, Loubna refused to look back and embarked on a courageous journey of activism, standing in opposition to both the regime and her abusive father.
The consequences of her actions were profound. Loubna's father was exiled, her mother tragically murdered, and her boyfriend, Peter Kassig, an American, was executed by ISIS. This memoir, written entirely in Loubna's own words, aims to shed light on her remarkable story, offering a glimpse into the hardships, sacrifices, and unwavering determination that shaped her life.
