Llewelyn Wyn Griffiths' Up to Mametz, published in 1931, has firmly established itself as one of the most exceptional accounts of soldiering on the Western Front. It chronicles the formation of a renowned Welsh wartime battalion (The Royal Welsh Fusiliers), its rigorous training, its baptism of fire in the trenches, and its harrowing ordeal at Mametz Wood on the Somme as part of 38 Division. However, that was where it ended. General Jonathon Riley has unearthed Wyn Griffiths' unpublished diaries and letters, which pick up where Up to Mametz left off and continue until the end of the War. Through meticulous editing and annotation, these missing years' events are now available alongside the original work, providing a captivating and comprehensive narrative.

Llewelyn Wyn Griffiths was born into a Welsh-speaking family in Llandrillo yn Rhos, North Wales. At the age of 24, he joined the Civil Service as a Tax Surveyor. When the War broke out, he was accepted for a commission in the 15th (1st London Welsh) Battalion of the Royal Welch Fusiliers and served in the Battalion or on the staff for the remainder of the War. Upon returning to the Inland Revenue, he assumed responsibility for the pay-As-You-Earn tax system, retiring in 1952. Griffiths held numerous prestigious appointments, including membership on the Arts Council and regular appearances as a broadcaster. He was honored with an Honorary DLitt by the University of Wales, and he held the CBE, OBE, Croix de Guerre, and MID. Griffiths passed away in 1977.
