Investing in farmers, or agriculture human capital, is crucial to addressing the challenges in our global agri-food systems. From sustainably feeding the world's growing population with food that is safe, healthy, and nutritious to finding innovative solutions for more resilient and climate-smart agriculture, we must prioritize this vital aspect of our global food systems.
To address this challenge, the FAO Investment Centre and the World Bank have developed a project in Uruguay aimed at up-skilling human capital for value-chain competitiveness. The objective of this project is to identify ways to enhance the skills of agricultural professionals, including researchers, agronomists, and technicians, to lead the next generation of technology and innovation-driven agribusinesses.
In this publication, we explore opportunities to increase key value chain efficiency and the skills required to seize these opportunities. We examine how training agricultural professionals can help develop human capital and foster a process of continuous development and upskilling in the agricultural sector.
This publication is part of the FAO Investment Centre's Knowledge for Investment (K4I) programme, which aims to provide policymakers and investors with evidence-based insights to inform investment decisions in agriculture and rural development. By investing in farmers and agriculture human capital, we can create a more sustainable, resilient, and equitable agri-food system that meets the needs of present and future generations.
