The USS Intrepid, a remarkable museum ship, holds the distinction of being one of the world's most visited vessels. This iconic aircraft carrier, known as the Fighting I, played a pivotal role in American history, serving for an astonishing 37 years. Launched during World War II, Intrepid and her courageous crews braved relentless attacks from kamikazes, torpedoes, and typhoons, enduring three grueling years of intense combat. After the war, Intrepid underwent a decommissioning process before being recommissioned in 1955 and redesignated as an attack carrier (CVA). In 1961, she was further upgraded to an antisubmarine warfare carrier (CVS).

During the early 1960s, Intrepid embarked on a significant mission, serving as a recovery vessel for some of the nation's pioneering astronauts during the Mercury and Gemini spaceflights. In 1966, she made her first of three deployments to the Tonkin Gulf, where she engaged in combat operations alongside Carrier Air Wing 10 during the Vietnam War. Throughout the early 1970s, Intrepid conducted patrols in the North Atlantic and Mediterranean, diligently searching for Soviet submarines in antisubmarine operations during the Cold War.

As her naval career drew to a close, Intrepid embarked on a new chapter, hosting Navy exhibits during the US bicentennial celebrations in 1976. After that, she found a permanent home as the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum on the Hudson River waterfront in New York City. Today, Intrepid continues to captivate visitors with its awe-inspiring stories, serving as a testament to the bravery and resilience of those who have served on board.
