  • More about Vanishing Stepwells of India

Stepwells are ancient Indian architectural structures that were built to provide water and serve as gathering places, refuges, and retreats. Most were abandoned due to modernization and the depletion of water tables, but some are being recognized and preserved by the Indian government and heritage organizations. This book documents over 70 stepwells, each unique in design and engineering, and includes color photographs and commentary on their history and architecture.

India is home to some of the most remarkable architectural structures found underground, known as stepwells. These ancient wells, dating back to around the 4th century CE, have evolved into intricate architectural marvels that were built across the country, particularly in arid western regions. Over time, stepwell construction became a complex feat of engineering and architecture, providing water throughout the year and serving as gathering places, refuges, and retreats.

Journalist Victoria Lautman first encountered stepwells three decades ago, and her book, now available in paperback for the first time, is a testament to her dedicated efforts to document these fascinating but largely unknown structures before they disappear. Of the thousands of stepwells that proliferated across India, most were abandoned due to modernization and the depletion of water tables. Frequently commissioned by royal or wealthy patrons, these wells vary greatly in scale and design, with some featuring columned pavilions and elaborate stone carvings, while others were less flamboyant but incorporated shady loggias and small chambers to escape the stifling heat.

Today, few stepwells are in use, with most left to silt up, fill with rubbish, and crumble into disrepair. However, the Indian government and heritage organizations are gradually recognizing the need to preserve these architectural wonders. In 2014, India's grandest and most well-known stepwell, the Rani ki Vav in Patan, Gujarat, was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site. In her introduction, Lautman discusses why and where stepwells were built, reflecting on the reasons behind their construction and the significance of these structures in Indian history and culture.

Stepwells are unique to India and have played a significant role in the country's history and culture. They not only provided water and a cool respite from the heat, but also served as a place of worship, social gathering, and cultural expression. These architectural wonders have withstood the test of time and continue to captivate people worldwide, reminding us of the rich heritage and ingenuity of India's past. It is essential that we work to preserve these structures and ensure that future generations can appreciate and learn from them.
