Varig was a renowned airline in South America, founded in 1927 by a German immigrant in Rio Grande do Sul. It expanded its route network beyond Brazil and introduced the Air Bridge between Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo. The Ruben Berta Foundation allowed employees to own shares, making it unique in aviation. Varig operated over 30 types of aircraft and went out of business in 2006.
