The Venetian War, which unfolded in 1487 between the powerful maritime state of Venice and the alpine Archduchy of Tirol, began with seemingly insignificant events and resulted in significant political disruptions, particularly in Tirol. This conflict is intricately linked to the enigmatic and somewhat tragic-comic biography of Archduke Sigismund of Tirol. The Venetian War marked a pivotal moment, straddling the transition from the Middle Ages to the early modern era. On one side, the conflict witnessed a knightly duel between Johann von Waldburg-Sonnenberg and Antonia Maria da Sanseverino, while on the other, it involved a protracted battle with heavy artillery to capture the city and castle of Rovereto. The Battle of Calliano proved to be a decisive turning point, pitting a veteran of the Burgundian Wars against a highly respected condottiere, with the breathtaking Adige Valley mountains serving as the dramatic backdrop. For the first time, the emergence of the Landsknecht, a new type of soldier, played a crucial role in the outcome of the battle. While the material remnants of the Venetian War are partially preserved today, they serve as a valuable treasure trove for archaeologists and historians. This book was developed in close collaboration with reenactment groups from Italy, Austria, and Germany. It includes detailed depictions of weapons, vibrant color illustrations, and exceptional reconstruction drawings by Wolfgang Braun.
