15 Army Groups 5th (US) and 8th (British) Armies achieved remarkable results in Northern Italy in early 1945, despite the diversion of major formations to NW Europe. Superb generalship, planning, preparation, and training outweighed the adverse terrain, harsh climate, and battle fatigue. The Allied offensive surprised the Germans with its speed and brilliance, leading to their capitulation on 2 May before the surrender in Germany. Churchill praised the 15th Army Group's operations, describing them as magnificently planned and executed.

While the primary objective in early 1945 remained the advance towards The Fatherland, the 5th (US) and 8th (British) Armies within 15 Army Groups achieved remarkable successes in Northern Italy. The exceptional generalship displayed by Truscott's 5th Army and McCreery's 8th Army, led by General Mark Clarks' 15 Army Group, outweighed the diversion of significant formations to Northwest Europe. Despite the challenging terrain, harsh climate, and widespread battle fatigue, meticulous planning, preparation, and training prevailed. The Allies improvised equipment and seamlessly coordinated air and ground operations to a remarkable degree. In April, the Allied offensive caught the Germans off guard with its swiftness and brilliance. As a consequence, the Germans capitulated on May 2, preceded by their surrender in Germany on May 7. In a letter dated April 29, 1945, Churchill expressed his profound admiration for the magnificently planned and executed operations of the 15th Army Group. He praised their efforts, deeming them truly praiseworthy and a masterful description and analysis of this victorious campaign.
